Francois van Zyl and his wife, Annemarie, started Vintage Metals in 2005. As a trained metal craftsman, Francois built on the tradition started by his father-in-law and mentor, Tobie Openshaw. Tobie was a self-taught metal artist who worked on many varied projects in the eighties and nineties.

Annemarie is a trained architectural historian, with a Master’s degree on Cape Dutch historical architecture and a Ph.D on Victorian architecture. Her field of interest perfectly complements and supports Francois’ work. Her expert input regarding authenticity, dating and design, assures clients of sound advice.

Apart from the restoration industry, the business has expanded into the design and manufacture of contemporary architectural hardware, because we realised that many discerning clients cannot find what they are looking for in normal retail outlets.

We have also responded to the great demand for custom-designed light fittings, and today it is a substantial part of our business.
